University of California at Davis Shelter Medicine Program Consultation at MADACC
The nonprofit organization Friends of MADACC has graciously agreed to fund a consultation by University of California at Davis shelter medicine program.
The UC Davis shelter medicine program was established in 2001 as the first university-based shelter medicine program in the world, and remains a recognized leader in this emerging field. They bring unparalleled familiarity with every aspect of shelter animal health care from both a practical and scientific perspective. Consultation emphasis has included outbreak management; facility design; population management and planning, and overall shelter health evaluation.
Although animal welfare organizations have been offering shelter evaluation services for some time, in-depth shelter health consultations are a relatively recent undertaking for the veterinary profession. The UC Davis shelter medicine program was the first program to offer this as a formal service. In general, their consultations focus on issues directly related to animal health, with “health” broadly defined to include all aspects of facility design and management that significantly impact mental and physical wellness of shelter animals.
The consultation by University of California at Davis shelter medicine program that Friends of MADACC is providing to MADACC will be their annual “Grand Consult”. This annual “Grant Consult” brings all of their partners from around the nation together. Each year they pick a shelter to do their grand consult with and this year it is MADACC!
There are going to be nationally known experts in the field of shelter medicine here including Dr. Kate Hurley and Dr. Sandra Newbury from UC Davis, Dr. Julie Levy from the shelter medicine program at the University of Florida as well as three other vets and residents, the Director of Shelter Medicine from Purdue University, a vet from Cornell shelter medicine program. They plan to observe MADACC's complete operation and provide MADACC with recommendations for best practices in shelter medicine and operations. There is not a better set of individuals out there to provide the latest, cutting edge information on shelter practices.
The consultation will be held the week of June 21, 2010. MADACC will be the first shelter in the Midwest to receive this consultation.
